Care for Your New Tattoo
You made it! This is the last step. Taking care of your new tattoo is important, but it's actually pretty simple. Your artist will give you instructions, and we'll explain everything here too.
Don't worry—you've got this! Following these steps will keep your tattoo looking beautiful for years to come.
Immediate Aftercare (First 24-48 Hours)
Your artist will bandage your new tattoo. Follow these steps carefully:
- Keep the Bandage On: Leave the initial bandage on for 2-4 hours (or as your artist instructs)
- Gently Wash: Remove the bandage and gently wash with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap
- Pat Dry: Use a clean paper towel to pat dry—don't rub
- Apply Ointment: Apply a thin layer of recommended aftercare ointment (your artist will specify which product)
- Re-bandage if Needed: Some artists recommend re-bandaging for the first night
Important: Your tattoo will ooze plasma and excess ink for the first day or two. This is normal! Just keep it clean.
The Healing Process (Weeks 1-4)
Your tattoo will go through several stages of healing:
- Days 1-3: Redness, swelling, and oozing are normal. Keep it clean and moisturized.
- Days 4-7: Scabbing begins. Don't pick at scabs! Let them fall off naturally.
- Weeks 2-3: Scabs fall off, revealing new skin underneath. The tattoo may look dull—this is normal.
- Weeks 3-4: The top layer of skin fully heals. Your tattoo should look vibrant again.
Continue washing 2-3 times daily and applying a thin layer of aftercare ointment or unscented lotion. Switch from ointment to lotion once scabbing is complete (usually around day 7-10).
What NOT to Do
Avoid these common mistakes that can damage your tattoo:
- Don't Pick or Scratch: This can remove ink and cause scarring
- No Soaking: Avoid pools, hot tubs, baths, and long showers for at least 2 weeks
- No Sun Exposure: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight for at least 4 weeks
- No Tight Clothing: Avoid tight clothes that rub against the tattoo
- No Exercise (Initially): Avoid heavy sweating for the first few days
- No Products: Don't use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or harsh soaps
- No Scratching: If it itches, gently pat or tap the area instead
Long-Term Care
Once your tattoo is fully healed, maintain its appearance with these practices:
- Sun Protection: Always apply SPF 30+ sunscreen to your tattoos when exposed to sun
- Moisturize: Keep your skin hydrated with unscented lotion
- Stay Healthy: Good overall health helps maintain skin quality
- Touch-ups: Some tattoos may need touch-ups after a few years, especially if exposed to sun
Sun exposure is the biggest enemy of tattoo longevity. UV rays fade ink over time, so consistent sun protection is essential for keeping your tattoo looking vibrant for years to come.
When to Contact Your Artist: If you notice excessive redness, swelling, pus, or signs of infection, contact your artist or a healthcare provider immediately.
